Here's Every Android Phone That Supports Gemini Nano So Far

In the race to develop powerful large language models (LLMs), technology giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google have been at the forefront, striving to create innovative services that capture the attention of consumers, businesses, and investors alike. While the computational power required for these LLMs typically exceeds what smartphones can offer, companies have begun developing mobile-optimized versions that can run natively on devices. Google’s latest offering in this arena is Gemini Nano, a lightweight yet powerful LLM designed for mobile platforms.

What is Gemini Nano

Launched in December 2023, Gemini Nano was initially exclusive to Google’s Pixel 8 Pro. However, within a month, it expanded its availability to include Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, marking the end of its brief exclusivity. Throughout 2024, Google continued to roll out Gemini Nano to additional Pixel devices and Samsung models. Recently, the model made its debut on Xiaomi smartphones, starting with the Xiaomi 14T, and has since broadened its reach to include various other brands.

Latest Gemini Nano Versions and Multimodality

The Gemini Nano models are part of the Gemini 1.0 family, but the latest versions introduce multimodality, allowing for image, speech, and audio input alongside text. This enhancement nearly doubles the performance compared to its predecessor, excelling in both academic benchmarks and real-world applications. Currently, the multimodal version is exclusive to the Google Pixel 9 series.

AI Features Powered by Gemini Nano

The multimodal capabilities of the new Gemini Nano significantly enhance the AI features available on supported devices:

  • Google Pixel 9 Series:
  • Screenshot: Analyzes screenshots locally to provide insights.
  • Talkback: Generates descriptions of images for visually impaired users.
  • Pixel Recorder: Summarizes transcripts of audio recordings.
  • Phone by Google: Shortens phone calls for more efficient communication.
  • Pixel Weather: Generates daily weather summaries.

The older version of Gemini Nano, available on devices like the Pixel 8 series, primarily supports text input. It assists the Gboard app in generating smart replies and can summarize audio recordings of up to 15 minutes.

On non-Pixel devices, the older Gemini Nano currently powers only one feature: Magic Compose in Google Messages, which generates suggested replies based on the context of recent messages.

Future of Gemini Nano

Although Magic Compose is the sole feature leveraging Gemini Nano on non-Pixel devices, Google has recently opened experimental access to the AI Edge SDK. This allows app developers to utilize Gemini Nano’s capabilities, although this access is limited to text-to-text prompting at this stage and is primarily intended for development purposes.

As Google continues to expand the reach of Gemini Nano, it aims to bring advanced AI features to a broader array of Android devices, enhancing user experience and functionality across the platform.
